1. Mini – hydro power is the hydro-power system that generates electric power from 100 kW to 1MW capacity and serves nearby households through a mini-grid.
2. Micro-hydro power is the hydro-power system that generates up to 100 kW electrical power and serves near by households through a local grid. This includes pico-hydro schemes up to 5 kW capacities. The cut off point of 5 kW is chosen as the subsidy policy is different for up to 5 kW and above 5 kW schemes.
3. Water turbine mill is hydro-power plant that generates only mechanical power typically in the range of 5 – 20 kW and powers mainly agro-processing machineries through belt drive for milling purpose.
4. Improved water mill is defined as an improved version of traditional waterwheel with a vertical axis and metal runner which is primarily used for grinding and hauling. IWM can also be used for electrifying a small No. of households.
